RVT with an emphasis of Anesthesia Monitoring and Perioperative Patient Care.

The RVT veterinary anesthetist position is primarily a patient-care based role.  The anesthetist is responsible for taking care of patient needs from check in, pre-op preparation, anesthetic induction, peri-operative anesthetic monitoring, troubleshooting, recovery, hospitalized treatments, and in also providing discharge instructions.  They may also be required to assist the doctors in the exam room with patient history taking, TPRs, physical exam restraint, and provide vital client communication such as treatment plans and discharge instructions.  The anesthetists are part of the surgical team responsible for keeping the doctors on time and prevent excessive patient time under anesthesia.   The anesthetist will work in collaboration with the surgeons and deliver anesthesia for medical treatments, imaging, and surgical procedures.  Medical records must also be completely and accurately filled out and all completed treatments signed off.  Technicians must possess excellent critical thinking and problem-solving skills, compassion, a positive attitude, respect (for clients, patients and teammates), as well as excellent communication skills and teamwork.  Multi-tasking and accepting constructive criticism is essential.  Punctuality is a must.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities General

  • General knowledge of surgical suite etiquette.
  • Comfortable with fluid therapy set up, administration, troubleshooting, as well as the use of syringe pumps for short term IV administration.
  • Proficient in general nursing skills:  safe and gentle animal restraint, placement and use of intravenous, injections (IV, IM, SC), TPR, venipuncture, catheter care, sling walking, feeding, administration of oral medication, wound care, etc.
  • Proficient knowledge of analgesic and anesthetic drug dosages/usage for pre-medication, anesthetic induction, anesthesia maintenance, and post-operative pain management.
  • Accurate logging for controlled substances. Assist in maintaining log and controlled substance inventory on a weekly basis.
  • Patient recovery / post-op monitoring smooth and safe with the ability to identify, address, and prevent potential complications in the post-operative period.  
  • Obtain blood samples for inhouse and outside laboratory via venipuncture via syringe, butterfly catheters and VIS guided cystos.
  • Prepare patients for surgery including:  intravenous catheter placement, surgical site prep with proper sterile technique, and proper patient positioning.
  • Perform specialized pre and post procedural radiographs, with appropriate knowledge of radiographic anatomy, positioning, and technique.
  • Safe handling and preparation of patients, recovery from laminectomies and cervical decompression.
  • Proficient use, care, and troubleshooting of anesthetic monitoring equipment including:  anesthetic machines and patient monitoring equipment.  This also includes safe use of warming devices.
  • Complete digital medical record in the PRE-OP period with verification and sign-off on required lab work and verification of completion of pre-op radiographs.
  • Assist in surgery suite set up and break down as needed.
  • Client communication as directed in Communication Process for Post-Surgery Cases and documented in Cornerstone.
  • Proper language and etiquette when talking with clients
  • Accurately fill prescription medications. Explain clearly at discharge Medication purpose, general side effects to look for, and proper prescribed dosing on label. Ensure all client questions on medication(s) are answered.
  • Assist surgeon in completing surgical report. Completeness and accuracy a must.

Qualifications

  • California Veterinary Medical Board RVT License in good standing.
  • High School Diploma or G.E.D. required.
  • At least 2-4 years as a veterinary technician with at least 2 years of anesthesia monitoring experience.
  • At least 2 years of anesthetic induction and anesthesia monitoring.
  • Must be able to safely lift 40 pounds unassisted or up to 150 pounds with 3 person assist.
  • Must be able to be on your feet for extended time periods and be able to properly restrain both large and small patients which often requires bending, crouching, squatting, leaning over, twisting, reaching, upper body strength, hand strength, sitting on the ground, and other physical demands.  Also must be strong enough to withstand pulling of a large strong dog on a leash.
  • Basic math and writing skills.
