Job Description:
POSITION SUMMARY Under the direction of the Director of
Transportation, the drivers are responsible for safely transporting
Mission Community Hospital (MCH) patients. Patients are picked up
and returned to their homes 5 days per week for the Turning Point
Intensive Outpatient Program. Drivers pick up and return home
surgery patients as needed, discharged patients from the Med Surge
floor, Chemical Dependency Unit, as well as most discharges from
Behavioral Health Unit. They are dispatched by the director 24
hours a day, 7 days per week. MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES All drivers
must hold a current, valid California driver's license. Driver is
required to have a current "Class B" license with Passenger (P)
endorsement. Drivers must have sworn statement as to safe driving
record plus medical certificate with driver's license at all times.
Roster of authorized drivers is to be approved by Director of
Transportation and Administration. No unauthorized persons shall
use Mission Community Hospital vehicles at any time. Driver is
responsible for obtaining all required information concerning
location, directions, belongings and medications. Driver must
perform required safety check of vehicle. Questions regarding
safety code must be reported to the Director of Transportation. If
vehicle does not pass required pre- departure safety check, the
vehicle will not be used until it passes inspection. Driver must
check seat belts on all passengers. Be sure that all passengers are
positioned and supervised to ensure maximum safety for all during
transit. Drive safely, defensively, within all speed limits, and
according to traffic, roads and weather conditions. Observe all
traffic and parking regulations. Drivers are not to drive with
headsets on or use listening devices, unless required by ADA, and
abide by all laws governing ‘hands free’ driving, meaning blue
tooth capabilities. Drivers are not to use their cell phones for
personal matter or text while driving. There is to be no smoking
while driving the van. Patients are not allowed to smoke while
being transported. If leaving vehicle unattended, be sure the
parking break is set, the key is removed and all windows and doors
are locked and lights turned off. Vehicle key must be in possession
of the driver at all times during the trip. Prohibit passengers
from engaging in horseplay or any unsafe actions, which could
endanger themselves, other passengers, the vehicle or other
vehicles on the road. When necessary, the driver must walk the
patient to the door and make sure a staff member knows he or she is
back from the hospital. Make sure driver locks the doors and takes
the keys when walking a patient to the door. Driver is responsible
for making sure that interior of vehicle is clean after his trip.
Remove all personal articles, and dispose of all trash left on
seats or floor of vehicle. 03/2009 Driver Tag any "lost belongings"
and submit to Director of Transportation for delivery to Lost and
found. Set parking brakes, and locks all doors and windows on
vehicle, turn off switches and lights. Return key to office.
Complete all required information on the mileage form sheet. In the
"Remarks" section, record any malfunction, unsafe conditions,
accidents, or unusual incidents encountered during the trip. Obtain
and complete an " Incident Report' regarding any patient or
passenger who has been injured or suffered ill- effects from any
cause during the trip. Submit the Incident Report to the Director
of Transportation Represent MCH by being courteous and respectful
to all hospital units’ patients and public. Safety is always a
priority! (Walk patients to their homes, vans checks, patients
seatbelts, follow speed limit, prohibit patient horse play, never
leave keys in the van). QUALIFICATIONS: Driver experience. High
School diploma or equivalency Experience working with the chronic
mentally ill population Acceptable driving record & Class B
licensed. 60 day period to obtain MAB certification. Current BLS
certification. Excellent written/verbal communication skills.
